Heiko Westermann comments on HSV against Schalke on Sky

At Schalke he matured to become a national player and at HSV to cult professional “HW4”. After 123 games in royal blue, Heiko Westermann moved to Hamburg in 2010 (173 games) and experienced turbulent years. With the end of his career in 2018, however, the 37-year-old was quiet. But now Westermann is back – on TV!

As the pay TV broadcaster Sky announced on Thursday, Westermann will accompany the second division season opener of his two ex-clubs next Friday (8.30 p.m.) as a co-commentator at the side of Hansi Küpper.

Second division: Westermann as co-commentator at HSV against Schalke

“As an ex-player of both clubs, he is a perfect guest commentator for the opening game,” said Sky sports director Charly Classen, explaining the selection of the ex-national player to the “Sportbuzzer”. Regular use of “HW4” at Sky is not initially planned.

Between 2010 and 2015, Westermann played his way into the hearts of HSV fans, including two grueling relegation duels (2013/2014 against Greuther Fürth, 2014/2015 against Karlsruher SC). He was no longer there when HSV was relegated, and after stints at Betis Sevilla and Ajax Amsterdam, he finally ended his career at Austria Wien in Austria. He has been a youth coach at the DFB since 2019, is currently coaching the U17 team – and is now making his comeback on TV.
