German judo team takes bronze in mixed competition

The 32nd Summer Olympics officially opened in Tokyo on July 23, almost a year late. More than 11,000 athletes from 206 nations will fight for gold, silver and bronze again in the next two and a half weeks. 431 athletes start for the German team. After seven days of competition, the Germans have so far had three gold, four silver and ten bronze medals on their account.

But the games are heavily criticized because of the still rampant corona pandemic. The Japanese capital Tokyo is in a state of emergency for the fourth time, which is expected to last until August 22nd. The number of infections has been increasing for days. On Thursday alone, the health authorities reported more than 10,000 new infections.

IOC President Thomas Bach still hoped to the end that spectators could still be admitted to the competitions, and always ensures that the well-developed hygiene concept ensures the safety of everyone involved. “We can confidently say that we have minimized the risk for these games,” said Bach.

Even before the official start some participants and also athletes became infected, the number of new infections is increasing every day. The organizing committee announced that the number of positive tests has risen to 220 since July 1. This also includes eight athletes.
