Oakley Cannonier (17), who played a small role in the Reds’ Champions League win over Barcelona in 2019, signed his first pro contract.

The lucidity of the young man had allowed Trent Alexander-Arnold to quickly take his corner.

It was May 7, 2019. Defeated 3-0 by Barcelona in the semi-final first leg of the Champions League, Liverpool had achieved the feat of winning the second leg with a score of 4-0.

Familiar with the improbable “remoradas”, Barcelona this time found themselves on the wrong side of history by conceding four goals at Anfield Road.

Three weeks later, the Reds won their sixth Champions League by beating Tottenham 2-0 in the final at the Metropolitano stadium in Madrid.

One game action had drawn particular attention against Barcelona. While the Reds led 3-0 (thanks in particular to an assist from Xherdan Shaqiri on the 2-0), the gesture of the ball collector Oakley Cannonier (15 years old at the time) had notably enabled Trent Alexander-Arnold and Divock Origi to deceive the vigilance of the Barcelonans on a corner and score the decisive 4-0.

A “skillful” attacker

This week, Oakley Cannonier (17) signed his first pro contract with Liverpool. The young club-trained player is notably portrayed as a “skilled striker with good ball control” in the club’s official statement.

Already considered a legend of the club by some supporters after his “feat” of 2019, Cannonier, who has been an English international in the youth teams, will have the opportunity to become one on the pitch, during the coming years.
