The Englishman, nicknamed “The Viking”, died Thursday. The PDC did not provide any information on the cause of death. As some English media reported, he is said to have fallen victim to multiple organ failure. “Andy has been one of the most famous players in the world and extremely popular throughout his career,” said PDC boss Barry Hearn.
In 2004 Fordham won the British Darts Organization (BDO) world title. He also won the BDO World Masters in 1999 and reached the semi-finals of the World Championship four more times. When he won the World Cup in 2004, he allegedly had 24 bottles of beer and a bottle of brandy. Alcohol was apparently the main reason for his obesity in some phases of his life.
“He was a great personality and a lovely man, and our thoughts right now are with his family and friends,” added Hearn. The Briton has lost a lot of weight over the course of his career after having weighed almost 200 kilograms at times.
Fordham suffered from numerous health problems, in particular back, groin and liver diseases troubled him. Last year he also had to undergo bowel surgery.
He was infected with the coronavirus earlier this year. The “Sun” he said about it: “This is the scariest thing I have ever experienced in my life. My greatest fear is waking up one morning, unable to breathe and being put in the back of the ambulance – and then not seeing my wife and children again. “
As the English newspaper reports, his wife Jenny was at her husband’s side for the last few minutes.
A BDO statement said: “The British Darts Organization is deeply saddened by the loss of a true gentleman of the game who is very much missed by everyone. Our hearts and thoughts are with his family during this time. “
Colleagues said goodbye to Fordham on social media. “It’s sad to hear of a legend’s demise,” said Adrian Lewis, two-time World Champion of the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC).
