Conference League

LASK has known its possible opponents in the third round of qualification for the new Conference League since Monday. The Upper Austrians will meet the winner of the second round duel between FK Panevezys from Lithuania and the Serbian club FK Vojvodina Novi Sad. The upcoming potential competitors are also known to Austria Wien – provided you clear the first hurdle.

In the event of promotion from the second qualifying round, Austria would face the winner of the pairing between Aberdeen from Scotland and BK Häcken from Sweden via Icelandic representative Breidablik. That was the result of the draw of the European Football Association (UEFA) on Monday in Nyon.

The third qualifying round, which LASK will enter, will take place on August 5th and 12th. According to the UEFA lottery ticket, Linz will play the first leg away before the return game is played in Klagenfurt. Due to the new construction of the Linz stadium, the Wörthersee Stadium is the alternative location for athletes during international games. In order to advance into the group phase, coach Dominik Thalhammer’s team would then have to take another hurdle in the play-off.

Panevezys from the small town of the same name is in third place in the current Lithuanian championship after 19 of 36 rounds, three points behind master Zalgiris. The FK Vojvodina classified in the past Serbian league as fourth in the table. The Serbs are favored in the duel with the Balts. The coach is 40-year-old Slavoljub Djordjevic, who ran for SCR Altach in spring 2009.

Austria stays in the north

In the event of promotion, Austria would have to travel either to the north of the British Isles or to the south of Scandinavia. Aberdeen finished fourth in the Scottish Championship, and 36-year-old warrior Scott Brown is new to the squad. The new season starts in the first week of August. Häcken is a club from the Swedish metropolis of Gothenburg, and this season the club is eighth. The Viennese would initially play at home in the third qualifying round. Against Breidablik, the violets will initially play in Vienna favorites on Thursday before they go to Iceland for the second leg.
