Carlos Ortiz, the golfer who built his way to Tokyo 2020 at the ‘speed of light’ – El Financiero

Carlos Ortiz began playing golf from childhood, as he frequently accompanied his parents to the Guadalajara Country Club courses. In this same place I saw Lorena Ochoa train and the age difference did not prevent them from living together and chatting from time to time; therefore, she grew up admiring the Mexican golfer and was her main inspiration to chart her path in the Olympic sport.

“I hope to inspire children, as Lorena Ochoa did with me,” Ortiz commented.

Ortiz’s career has been consistent and brilliant, having started professionally in the world of golf eight years ago and will now participate in Tokyo 2020. He has excelled on the PGA Tour.

Although his passion for sports was latent, fate took him in other directions and he studied International Relations at the University of North Texas.

Later, at his educational institution, he was chosen to play on the golf team and this became the sport that would change his life.

Ortiz made his debut as a golf professional in 2013 and it was until 2014 that he received his card to be able to compete in the Web.com Tour. That same year he won three titles.

He is the winner of the Panama Claro Championship, the Bosque México Championship and the WinCo Foods Portland. With these three victories he was awarded the card to compete on the PGA Tour in the 2014-2015 season.

In 2019, within the PGA Tour, Carlos obtained the second place in the Mayakoba Golf Classic. In 2020 Ortiz won the Houston Open; since 1978 no Mexican had obtained this title in the PGA. He is also the second Latin American golfer to win the tournament.

Currently, the golfer from Guadalajara occupies the 65th place in the World Gold Ranking, his best position since he began his career.

On June 22, the International Golf Federation published that Carlos Ortiz is confirmed to represent Mexico in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. In addition, the Mexican Golf Federation (FMG) also ratified the Mexican athlete.

The men’s Olympic competition will be held from July 29 to August 1, on the field of the Kasumigaseki Country club.
