The Mexican Carlos Ortiz is among the trio of leaders of the men’s golf tournament of the Tokyo 2020 Games in the equator of the third round on Saturday.

Ortiz, the Japanese Hideki Matsuyama and the American Xander Schauffele, who compete together in the final group of the round, are even at 12 under par after the first nine holes.

Ortiz, what concluded on Friday in second place behind Schauffele, reached him in the co-leadership thanks to a great start to the day with three birdies and a bogey.

The player from Guadalajara, number 61 in the world ranking, seeks another historic triumph for Mexican golf after 2020 ended the 42-year drought without PGA titles of the Latin American country.

Resenting the pressure to represent the local country, Matsuyama had a discreet first day at the Kasumigaseki Country Club, close to Saitama, but his second round of 64 strokes was only beaten by Xander Schauffele.

The American, with four PGA titles, but no Grand Slam, held out at the top of the tournament with two birdies and a bogey midway through Saturday.
