British Open: two Canadians in the top 10

South African Louis Oosthuizen remained top of the British Open after three rounds on Saturday at Club Royal St. George’s, but two Canadians, including the surprising Corey Conners, still have chances of claiming the title.

Conners has gained 13 positions and is now in the fourth rung with a total of 202 strokes (-8). The Ontarian played the second best round of all golfers, a 66 (-4). Only the Scottish Robert MacIntyre (65) did better.

Conners’ return nine was particularly successful, as he recorded his four birdies of the day between 10th and 14th pennant.

Mackenzie Hughes clings to the top 10 with his score of 203 (-7). His run on Saturday was punctuated with more highs than lows. The Canadian wedged four birdies, including one on the par 4 on the 18th hole, and suffered two bogeys.

Oosthuizen came one step closer to his second British Open title. His round of 69 (-1) was not very convincing, but the 38-year-old is still only 18 holes away from repeating his 2010 feat.

He has since stepped onto the second step of the majors podium six times without winning, and he knows he needs to stick to his plan and not crumble under the pressure.

“It’s not great to finish second, so tomorrow I’ll play with all my heart on the line and see if I can lift the Claret Trophy again. We shouldn’t take unnecessary risks, but if the opportunity arises for more aggressive blows, we should try it. This is how we win championships. ”

Nevertheless, the South African’s advance continues to melt away. At -12, he only has one priority shot over American Collin Morikawa and two over the latter’s compatriot, Jordan Spieth.

Dustin Johnson had a tough third round after settling in fourth place the day before. His 73 (+3) card put him down 14 places and he is now eight strokes behind the leader.

No other Canadian had been able to avoid the chopper on Friday.
