Barack Obama becomes partner of NBA Africa

WASHINGTON | Former US President Barack Obama has become a strategic partner of NBA Africa, which aims to develop the popularity of the North American basketball championship in Africa, the NBA announced on Tuesday.

He will also have a small financial contribution, the fruits of which he intends to invest in his foundation for youth in Africa, the League said.

“The NBA has always been a great ambassador for the United States, using basketball to create deeper connections across the world, and in Africa, basketball has the power to promote greater chances, better equality. and taking responsibility, ”Barack Obama said in a statement.

“By investing in communities, defending gender equality and nurturing the passion for basketball, I believe NBA Africa is able to make a difference for many young Africans,” he said. added.

“I was impressed by the commitment of the championship in Africa, including by the responsibility shown by so many African players who want to support their countries and their communities”, underlined the former democratic president (2009-2017).

Among the players who have also decided to invest in NBA Africa are Grant Hill, Junior Bridgeman, Luol Deng, Ian Mahinmi, Dikembe Mutombo and Joakim Noah.

The NBA notably opened offices in South Africa in 2010 and the first edition of the African basketball championship, the Basketball Africa League (BAL), took place last May in Rwanda after being postponed for a year in due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
