Arjen Robben ends his career – this time for good

The 96-time Dutch international Arjen Robben is ending his career. The 37-year-old had already announced his departure from professional football in 2019, but after a year break he dared a surprising comeback at his youth club FC Groningen. It was there that he made his professional debut at the age of 16. Robben comes from Bedum, a ten-minute drive away. Due to injury, he was only able to play in seven games for the seventh of the season in the Eredivisie.

“Dear football friends,” Robben wrote in a statement, “I have decided to end my active football career. It was a tough decision. I would like to thank everyone for their heartwarming support! «His contract expired in the summer.

The winger finished second with the national team in 2010 and third four years later. With FC Bayern Munich, for whom he played between 2009 and 2019, he was eight times German champion and five times winner of the DFB Cup. In 2013 he scored the 2-1 winner in the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.
