TOKYO, Jul 28 (Reuters) – Two-time world champion Chizuru Arai won the women’s up to 70 kg category at the Tokyo Games on Wednesday by beating Austrian Michaela Polleres in the final to add sixth in judo for Japan.

The Japanese team has been winning golds in judo for five consecutive days and is just two short of its record of eight Olympic titles set in Athens in 2004.

The Dutch Sanne Van Dijke and the Russian Madina Taimazova won the bronze medals.

“When the coronavirus delayed the Olympics, I had the feeling that what I had achieved was eluding me, but my rivals around the world continued to train under those circumstances, so I tried to keep up with them,” said Arai, 27, fifth in the world ranking.

In the men’s up to 90 kg event, the Georgian Lasha Bekauri took the gold, beating the German Eduard Trippel in the final. Davlat Bobonov from Uzbekistan and Krisztian Toth from Hungary took bronze.
