Abraham Ancer, the ‘Turk’ who seeks history in golf – El Financiero

Golf made a hole-in-one at Abraham Ancer – it was the first sport he played and he caught it immediately. Although he confesses that it is not as fun as others.

The 29-year-old is one of four Mexican golfers who got his place to attend the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and he has a great chance of winning a medal (is in position 10 of the Olympic ranking).

He was born on September 17, 1991 in McAllen, Texas, but grew up in Reynosa, where he lived until he was 14 years old. He has both American and Mexican nationality.

From the age of two he accompanied his father to the Tamaulipas Country Club and at the age of four he began to play.

His earliest memories of golf include meeting American Jack Nicklaus, considered the greatest golfer in history.

In 2006, Ancer and his family returned to McAllen and enrolled in Sharyland High School in Mission, where he was an All-Valley four-year, three-time MVP.

He then attended Odessa Junior College and then entered the University of Oklahoma, from which he graduated in 2013 to begin his professional career as a golfer.

Two years after leaving university, he reached the Web.com, the official development tour of the PGA Tour, which is the premier American men’s professional golf circuit and the largest in the world, and in another two years entered the major leagues.

In 2016 he did not achieve the required ranking to attend the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

“It is the first time that I will represent Mexico in the Olympic Games and, apart from being a great honor, I go with great pride, emotion and a lot of desire to play my best goal,” he declared at the end of June at a conference.

Ancer won the 2018 Australian Open and a year later became the first Mexican to play the Presidents Cup.

He enjoys collecting putters, hunting, the shooting range, playing soccer, and his wish list includes jumping out of a plane and flying a fighter aircraft.

His favorite quote is from the American motivational writer Zig Ziglar, who said, “You are the only person on earth who can use your skill.”

In addition, he also knows how to play in the field of business, as he is the co-founder of a premium tequila brand and a luxury clothing brand.

If you weren’t a professional golfer, you would drive race cars. By the way, he would like to switch places with Sebastian Vettel for a day, as “driving a Formula 1 car is much more fun.”
