Yankees hit two triple plays in a season for the first time

The New York Yankees had a rare triple play Thursday against Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and the Blue Jays, the first time in the history of the award-winning franchise with two triples in a season.

The Yankees achieved their first triple play of the season on May 21 against the White Sox with a relatively routine play, a ground run to third base with runners at first and second.

This was much more unusual.

Yankees pitcher Michael King walked Marcus Semien to open the game and allowed a single to Bo Bichette. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second and third with no oots and Guerrero Jr. at the plate.

The Dominican slugger hit a slow grounder to King, who pitched to first for the out. First baseman DJ LeMahiue then pitched shortstop Gleyber Torres at second base and with both running backs midway.

Torres threw catcher Gary Sanchez, who then tossed the ball to Gio Urshela, who put Semien out between third and the plate. Colombian Urshela passed the ball to Torres, who retired Bichette by sweeping into the anteroom, a tight play that had to be revised.

It is the first time the 1-3-6-2-5-6 sequence has been used in any of the 726 triples in Major League history, according to the Baseball Almanac database.

With Thursday’s, New York has converted 26 triple plays in its history and it’s the 10th time Toronto has hit for one.
