It may seem strange but it is true, Peru does not have a basketball team and it seems that this sport has been forgotten by Peruvians. What is true is that the Peruvian country has had a national team for some long years of its history, something that it seems that we will have to wait to relive those years that gave so many joys to the country.
If we go back in the history of this sport in that country, in the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 Ricardo Duarte, a basketball player who played some of the great championships with the Peruvian National Team, became the top scorer of the entire tournament. Today, the same player is trying to bring out a practically non-existent federation due to the lack of equipment.
The Peruvian Basketball Team made history. The selection became Gold in the South American Basketball Championship in 1938. Since then it has obtained two bronzes in a row some 50 years ago. However, he did not have the same luck in the World Cup, where he has participated only 4 times. In the last one it was in 1967 when the fans still could not enjoy the bookmakers with no deposit bonus, since, although it is a great tradition, it was not until 1999 when the law on gambling was approved.
In recent years, Peru has not participated in any championship, neither in the Pan American Games in recent years nor in other sporting events. However, this is due to the fact that the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has suspended the Peruvian Basketball Federation. This situation is considered a kind of punishment for the selection.
One of the most relevant people in the history of basketball and who for all these years has been at the foot of the canyon fighting to be able to put this sport back in its rightful place is Ricardo Duarte. He has always been related to this sport and, in addition, his relatives have also been basketball players.
Thus, as Duarte has announced, this situation of censorship towards Peruvian basketball comes from years ago. According to him, he has organizational and political causes of basketball because, when Lainez’s term ended in 2016, the winner of the following elections was Quezada. However, the Peruvian Institute of Sports did not recognize him with that position since they affirm that it was not a transparent electoral process.
In such a way that the IPD created a working group led by former player Ricardo Duarte in order to call new elections although these intentions were not very successful because other registrations made by Quezada’s team were delaying it.
Quezada is the president of the Trujillo Basketball League and it is rumored that his position was imposed by his predecessor, which is why they are not considered fair elections. And, to this day, due to long bureaucratic processes within the sports institution, sport has taken a back seat and its players have been left without competing.
Thus, there are several coaches and players in this sport who have pointed out the corruption that exists in the basketball federation in the last 30 years. On the other hand, Duarte himself has pointed out that Lainez created during his tenure an association parallel to the federation in order to have personal benefits.
The complaints are innumerable and as long as Sunarp does not resolve all the instances demanded by the two sides, it will not be possible to continue playing basketball. At the moment it seems that it is not due to the work and that this situation will continue for several more years. On the contrary, the federation could be dissolved in order to be able to re-create another from scratch. It will take a few years for this to happen again.
