Wes Roach takes the lead in Congaree

In pursuit of a first title on the PGA Tour, Wes Roach surrendered a card of 64, or 7 strokes under the by Thursday on day one of the Palmetto Championship. Thanks to his six birdies, a single bogey and a very beautiful eagle on hole number 4, the 32-year-old golfer was suddenly ahead of a quartet which included the South African Erik van Rooyen, the Americans Doc Redman, Chesson Hadley and the world number 1 Dustin Johnson.

Johnson, a native of the region, is trying to restart his season on the Congaree course. Since his last victory at the 2020 Masters and the Saudi Arabian Open in February, he has never again placed in the Top 10 of the tournaments he has played. For the moment he is off to a good start with a card without any bogey and six birdies.
