El golf de Bizkaia remembers Jos Manuel Cortizas, EL CORREO journalist who died of COVID last February. Chronicler and good friend of Jon Rahm, Corti give name to a Memorial that this July 3 will celebrate its first edition at the Meaztegi Golf Course. The tournament will be played in the Scramble mode by teams and the registration, which remains open, now reaches 112 participants. Competitors will have amateur character and winners will receive a cup with history: it is a century old and donated by Koldo Ochandiano and Estanis Bardeci. The throphy will remain in custody at the Meaztegi Golf Club, although each edition there will be a ceremony of delivery to the champions.

Carlos Roca, managing director of the Meaztegi golf course (La Arboleda) and Eduardo Celles, who has a school in Derio and was one of Jon Rahm’s first instructors and advisors, have participated this Thursday in the presentation of an event with a vocation to perpetuate itself in time. The two kept a close relationship with Corti, to whom they attribute much of the blame for having put the interscholastic golf league in Bizkaia into action. The late journalist and Rahm met on more than one occasion at the La Arboleda course, which in 2018 and 2019 was the scene of the final day of the Seve & Jon Golf for Kids. In October 2018, at the press conference that followed the competition for children and adolescents, Rahm declared that “the goal is a major, which is something I want since I was a child.” Success has come this June 2021 at the US Open.

El jUgador de Barrika dedicates the victory of the US Open to Corti in a very emotional way: “This trophy goes for him. Corti was a basketball journalist who one day, suddenly, the owner of the newspaper told him that there was a boy from Barrika who played very well golf and that he had to start playing golf. Without hesitation, he took a plane and followed me around the world. I hadn’t set foot on a golf course and had no idea what this was. I think it started coinciding with my first professional year and, unfortunately, A few months ago he died of Covid. Too soon. He was in good health. From the time he entered the ICU until his death, very little time passed. He would have loved to be here. He had just started playing golf a bit. He treated me great and always told me what I did well and what I did wrong. He was someone to be proud of.. At the same time there is a girl in her 20s (June) who now has no father and everything happened very quickly. He was a good friend of my family. I dedicate it to because no one else would have been so excited to cover this. “

July 3 Rahm is very possible that he is in Europe on the doorstep of the British Open (July 15 to 18) and it should not be ruled out that if his commitments allow him to, he will appear at the tournament awards ceremony. Barrika’s player calendar starting July 18 includes preparation for the Tokyo Olympics, in which to compete for Spain with Rafa Cabrera Bello from July 29 to August 1.
