Vietnam proposes to postpone Southeast Asian Sports Games to 2022

>> SEA Games 31 and Para Games 11 will be postponed

This proposal was presented at a virtual meeting attended by the Coordination Office of the Southeast Asian Games Federation and representatives of Olympic Committees from countries in the region.

According to a meeting participant, representatives from Southeast Asian countries pay special attention to the evolution of COVID-19 in Vietnam and shared information on the situation in their respective countries.

Currently, the pandemic has seriously affected the preparations of countries in the region. The Southeast Asian Olympic Committees have recognized Vietnam’s proposal and will report to higher authorities in their respective countries, before reaching a conclusion, likely within the next two weeks. The final decision will be made by the Southeast Asian Games Council.

As expected, the 31it is Southeast Asian Games are scheduled to be held from November 21 to December 2, 2021 in Hanoi and 10 neighboring provinces. The main competition venues will be in Hanoi and in the provinces of Hoa Binh, Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, Vinh Phuc, Hai Duong, Bac Giang, Nam Dinh, Phu Tho, Ha Nam, Hai Phong city.

Around 10,000 athletes, coaches and associated personnel are expected for this edition. However, sports authorities and experts agree that if COVID-19 is not fully controlled, it will be very difficult to hold SEA Games 31 as planned.

SEA Games 31 will include 40 disciplines with 520 competition categories. These are athletics, water sports, gymnastics, rowing, canoeing / kayaking, soccer, shooting, archery, wrestling, judo, taekwondo, karate, wushu, weightlifting, boxing, kickboxing, badminton, fencing, sepak takraw, tennis, volleyball, basketball, cycling, billiards and snooker, golf, vovinam, chess, pencak silat, sport dance, among others.

The 11it is Southeast Asian Sports Games for the Disabled (ASEAN Para Games 11) are scheduled to take place December 17-28 in Hanoi, comprising 14 disciplines and around 400 competitions. In October 2020, the SEA Games 31 and ASEAN Para Games 11 Organizing Committee chose the saola, an animal species listed in the Vietnam Red Book, as the mascot for these regional games.
