Tokyo, 5 tennis players qualified (340 blues in all, a record)

Tennis gets five passes for Tokyo 2020. The formal communication came from the International Federation after the closing of the ranking on June 14 and the simultaneous reallocation of the shares, based on the criteria of the qualification system. The current ranking has allowed Matteo Berrettini (9), Jannik Sinner (23), Lorenzo Sonego (26) and Fabio Fognini (29) to snatch the ticket for the XXXII edition of the Summer Olympic Games in the individual men’s field, and Camila Giorgi ( 76) in the female one, precisely by virtue of a redistribution of the slots. The regulation provided for the automatic entry of the first 56 athletes in the ranking and another 8 awarded by the ITF.

The blues qualified for Tokyo 2020 thus rise to 340 (172 men, 168 women) in 33 different disciplines with 127 individual passes. It is the eighth time that Italy has exceeded 300: previously Athens 2004 (367), Sydney 2000 (361), Atlanta 1996 (347), Beijing 2008 (340), Barcelona 1992 (318), Rio 2016 (314 ) and Los Angeles 1984 (312). Already surpassed, with 340, Los Angeles, Rio and Barcelona. Equal to Beijing, Atlanta will also be surpassed as there are still several qualifiers missing (golf, athletics, basketball, archery, etc.). In Athens there were 8 teams, now there are four (men’s and women’s volleyball, softball, Settebello) and at most there could be five if men’s basketball will do the miracle. However, the individual qualifier record has already been set. A great edition, aiming for 33 medals, 11 gold, hopes Malagò.
