The Tribune on England: “Is football coming home? I still give them 1 percent” | European Football Championship 2020

England started as a (shadow) favorite at the European Championship, but the English did not give a crushing impression in the group stage. Filip Joos and Tim Wielandt analyzed the English talent and their chances at this European Championship after the last group match against the Czech Republic.

National coach Gareth Southgate has a pond full of talents, but the stars are not shining at this European Championship for the time being. Although it is especially Jack Grealish that makes Filip Joos lick his lips.

“I want to comment on every match he competes in,” says our commentator.

“By the way, don’t push him to one of those top clubs. Let him stay at Aston Villa. And let’s enjoy him there as a kind of work of art in a shrine.”

Jadon Sancho is another English purebred horse, but yesterday Bukayo Saka was dropped in the base. “If you say that Sancho has to start, then you don’t know Saka”, Joos emphasizes.

“I’ve seen too many games of Sancho against top teams he didn’t give in. I’m not saying he won’t make a great career, but at the moment I find Saka more useful for this team.”

Deep in rush hour, Harry Kane lets it down for the time being. “Look at all of Kane’s matches in previous tournaments: really weak. Kane in a tournament is not what he promises in the Premier League.”

“England just isn’t good enough”

The English will compete in the 1/8th finals of the European Championship against the number 2 from group F, the group of death.

Filip Joos: “England is just not good enough, as we predicted.”

“To make it beautiful they need Grealish, but you won’t become European champions with him. But it’s more fun with him. And they won’t become European champions without him either. So put him in.”

“You should not underestimate how much pressure the fans put on the players”, Tim Wielandt points out. “After 15 minutes they started singing: football’s coming home.”

“Is football coming home? I still give them 1 percent,” says Filip Joos. “I don’t want to give anything because they still have the guns.”

“If you score goals and take few goals, then it is possible. But against big opponents I don’t see it happening.”

You should not underestimate the pressure the English fans put on the players. After 15 minutes they started to sing: football is coming home.
