The ephemeral Grand Palais, a showcase for wooden construction, opens its doors

The doors of the ephemeral Grand Palais (GPE) will finally open to the curious. Installed on the Champ de Mars 650 meters from the Eiffel Tower, this 20-meter-high wooden and canvas cross, with a 150-meter nave, has been completed. For a week, its architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte and his sponsor Chris Dercon, president of the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, have been busy presenting the work, before it welcomes the public on June 12 for a first show.

This ephemeral 45 million euros structure will replace the Grand Palais under renovation until 2024, then host Olympic judo and wrestling events before being dismantled at the end of the 2024 Para-Olympic Games.
