The combination of sport and culture closes the school year at the “Sturzo” of Biancavilla

The “Luigi Sturzo” middle school in Biancavilla concluded the school year with two events that combine sport and culture: the awarding of the “Badminton-mixed doubles” school tournament and the “Reading to win” school reading championship.

The badminton tournament saw the second and third classes engaged with great enthusiasm and desire to start again, despite the restrictions related to the Covid emergency. The head teacher Giuseppina Furnari and the physical education teachers Dovì, Sapienza, Bonanno and Castelli, with great satisfaction, gave credit to the first three classified and to all the finalists.

This gave the school community a moment of joy, lightheartedness and healthy competition.

Following, in the premises of the school gym, the first edition of the school reading championship. The protagonists were eight first and five second classes. It was a tournament based on three groups between classes. Parallel teams that challenged each other on the knowledge of two fiction texts: “And I destroy the school” by Beppe Forti and “For this my name is Giovanni” by Luigi Garlando. Texts chosen by the Disciplinary Department of Letters and on some study topics. The winning classes were: 1 F, 1 A, 1 G, 2 A, 2 L, 2 D.

The Sturzo teachers, in line with the new ministerial guidelines, have allowed the students, through the hours dedicated to fiction, to discover, love and appreciate reading, not only to acquire language skills. But also to learn to understand texts of different genres, with the ultimate goal of allowing each person to mature personally. The goal was to create a real tournament with training, scores, rankings and final prize, enhancing merit, team spirit and healthy competition. The school reading championship, carried out by all the literature teachers of the school, was promoted and organized by Prof. Carmelita Sapienza, who wanted to share a good teaching practice experimented in recent years in another school.

The students were evaluated by an external jury, made up of professors Lina Mursia, Maria Greco, Roberta Lanza and Federica Papotto, who thus contributed to human and cultural growth.

Present at the end of the event the mayor Antonio Bonanno and the councilor for school policies, Francesco Privitera.
