As the last of the parties in the Bundestag, the CDU and CSU have now also presented their election program. There was particularly great interest in how the Union would position itself in terms of climate protection. On the one hand, because the Greens are currently the strongest competition for the Union, on the other hand, because this Bundestag election in September is decisive for whether and how the political course is set for a path towards a climate-neutral Germany.
The reactions to the Union’s climate protection plans have been largely negative. It was particularly criticized that the CDU and CSU confidently announce that they will make Germany the first climate-neutral industrial country, but remain as vague as possible about the concrete measures.
Jakob Schlandt, head of the Tagesspiegel Expert Briefing Background Energy & Climate sees this primarily as a tactic with a view to upcoming coalition negotiations. However, he criticizes “in some statements populism”. According to Jakob Schlandt, the Union must “make itself honest”. Because it is clear: “There will be restrictions.” Some ideas of the Union would therefore probably “collapse at the negotiating table” in possible talks with the Greens.
How Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet himself feels about climate protection is also what this episode of the yardstick is about. In addition, members of the “Citizens’ Council Climate”, who presented their recommendations for politics on June 24th, have their say. The “question of the week” is answered by the traffic expert Katrin Dziekan, who already explained in the previous series of indicators why the current traffic policy is not only bad for the climate, but also socially unjust.
