The uncle and former coach of tennis player Rafa Nadal, Toni Nadal, affirmed that “it is important to accept defeats well” because, according to him, life has bad moments that you have to know how to face, on the spot as graduation godfather of the 4,000 students of Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the CEU San Pablo University of Madrid.
In his speech, Toni Nadal has indicated to future professionals that it is very important “to accept defeats well, that life has bad moments and that you have to know how to face them”. “Since they serve as a stimulus to continue advancing,” he added.
Referring to his nephew’s professional career, he pointed out that he never tried to make a big difference between great successes and defeats, “since successes and failures are part of life.” He also recalled the importance of “having a passion for what you do and committing yourself to be useful to society.”
“With your way of doing things well, you have the obligation to leave the university in which you have trained in a good place,” he said. Another tip that Toni Nadal has given to young people has been to be “normal guys” (“My nephew is a normal guy,” he said). “You can have professional success, but you must know who you are and keep your feet on the ground, my nephew has never stopped being a normal person,” he said.
For Toni Nadal, enjoying doing things well is a sign of being a well-trained person. Thus, he recalled that Rafa Nadal has always found enjoyment in effort, in trying to improve himself every day. “In life we must seek the personal satisfaction of knowing that with our efforts obstacles are overcome. The enjoyment is in trying to overcome, is knowing that you can reach more,” he said.
In her speech, the rector of the University, Rosa Visiedo, conveyed her congratulations to the students for having reached this goal and told them that she hopes to have awakened in them the love of learning, the ability to think critically, solid values and determination to act to build a more just and supportive society. “You are creators of the future and it is in your hands,” he said.
