After Monday’s rains, This Tuesday the qualifying stage started for the main draw at Wimbledon, instance of the tournament that will begin next week, in which 17 South American tennis players participated. The balance: seven wins and ten losses (two matches were each other).
The first Argentine joy came thanks to the porteño Francisco Cerúndolo, 22 years old and number 122 in the world ranking, who beat Brazilian Felipe Meligeni 6-4 and 6-2 and advanced to the second round of qualifying. The right-hander, finalist of the ATP 250 Argentina Open, disputes for the third time the previous instance of a Major (Australian Open and Roland Garros 2021).
The second celebration came from Tomás Etcheverry from La Plata, 21 and 193, who beat Turkish Cem Ilkel 6-1 and 6-4 and dreams of his first frame in a Grand Slam.
The third and last would be from Marco Trungelliti from Santiago, 31st and 206th, who beat his compatriot Leonardo Mayer 6-4 and 6-2 and will seek to overcome the Wimbledon qualification for the first time in his career (the current one is his seventh participation).
The other four South Americans who celebrated were Bolivian Hugo Dellien, 130th racket on the planet, who defeated Britain’s Aldan McHugh 6-2 and 6-1 and will seek to qualify for the second time in his career to the main draw, the Chileans Tomás Barrios Vera, recent finalist of the Challenger of Almaty, Kazakhstan, who defeated by 7-6 (2) and 7-6 (5) the American Mitchell Krueger, and Alejandro Tabilo, who beat Frenchman Alexandre Muller 6-2, 6-4 and has a negative record in Grand Slam quallies (one of three), and the Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild, 127 of the world and that he beat 6-4 and 6-4 to the German Tobias Kamke.
Seven Albiceleste representatives were quickly eliminated: Juan Cerúndolo (6-4, 2-6 and 3-6 against the French Enzo Couacaud), Guido Andreozzi (4-6 and 4-6 versus the Dutch Robin Haase), Renzo Olivo (2-6 and 5-7 against Belgian Ruben Bemelmans), Andrea Collarini (4-6 and 2-6 against the Spanish Carlos Taberner), Juan Ficovich (5-7 and 1-6 against the French Benjamin Bonzi), Sebastian Baez (7-6, 3-6 and 2-6 against Australian Matthew Ebden) and Mayer, previously mentioned.
In addition, four other South Americans did not pass the first round: Brazilians Felipe Meligeni (before Francisco Cerúndolo) and Joao Menezes (4-6 and 3-6 against young local Jack Pennington), the Peruvian Juan Varillas (1-6 and 1-6 against Chinese Zizhen Zhang) and the Ecuadorian Emilio Gómez (1-6, 6-3 and 3-6 against the French Maxime Janvier).
The seven qualifiers already know their rivals in the crossing that will define the pass to the third and last round of the Wimbledon qualification: Trungelliti will go against Seyboth Wild, Francisco Cerúndolo against the Italian Roberto Marcora, Etcheverry against the Indian Ramkumar Ramanathan, Dellien against the German Daniel Masur, Tabilo against the Chinese Zizhen Zhang and Barrios Vera against the French Enzo Couacaud,
