Sainey: “My life in a film: it’s a dream”

Sainey in “One day at night”

On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, celebrated in Forte Sofia today and tomorrow, including debates, photographic exhibitions, DJ sets, a physical preview will be screened “One day in the night” by the Veronese director Michele Aiello and Michele Cattani. The event is organized by One Bridge To Idomeni, an association that supports migrants on their journey along the Balkan route with humanitarian expeditions, collections of basic necessities and laboratories, and then testifies their history in Verona and Italy. The theme of the event is the frontier intended as a meeting place. In this sense, the documentary “One day in the night” revolves around Sainey Fatty, a boy of Gambian origin, who arrived in Italy six years ago and suffers from retinitis pigmentosa, a degenerative eye disease that over time causes blindness. Telling himself in first person in brief vis-à-vis with the camera and observed by the silent gaze of the directors, Sainey attends baseball training for the blind, art history courses, braille courses. In short, he prepares himself for the life that awaits him. The look, however, is anything but tragic, also thanks to his friendship with Pasquale, a blind gentleman who gently accompanies him on this journey. “Un giorno la notte” was born from a participatory cinema workshop, where Sainey brought a short film on the subject as a final task. Struck by the value of the story, the two directors expanded the project with the production of Zalab by Andrea Segre. The shooting format is an unusual 4: 3. “The format refers to Sainey’s visual conditions,” explained the directors. “It wants to be a limitation for the public, forced to experience a more limited vision than what it is accustomed to.” For his part, Sainey confesses: «I loved the idea of making a film even alone: for me it meant a lot to be able to share the story of my life. What was even more important to me was the opportunity to introduce people to a rare and little known visual impairment ». The appointment is tonight at 9.15 pm. To access the evening you need to book on Eventbrite. DD
