Speculating has punishment. It is a fact, as the small differences are what define the world. A few small details; a few moments of clarity of a daring Denmark, but at times blunt, took away the illusion of a Russia that knew the script very well; that the role of the Numantine defense had been studied. And it almost went well for him, but Damsgaard and Poulsen spoiled the party for him. A Russia that came out to draw took two goring in two errors and was beaten, because the last two goals were justice and props. Just retribution for his mischief.
With Soviet discipline and tactics the Russians came out. They cared little that the Danes monopolized the ball; their raids ended in nothing and those of Cherchesov, sometimes desperate at how far back they were, were comfortable waiting. His Zhukov was Golobin, who twice tested Schmeichel by showing that the straight line is the shortest path between two points. Denmark, however, looked like Spain: a lot of possession and little danger. The drakar was sinking as it tried to haunt the Russian area.
With no points after two defeats, the Danes kept their hopes up, but more out of Viking pride than out of tenacious mathematics that had already looked down on the Norse since their last defeat. They were also wrong. Hojbjerg made them believe in themselves after a good chance.
Russia seemed to be doing well, but they were playing with fire. And so, in a defensive oversight, in a multi-organ failure at the rear, Damsgaard scored 1-0, which demolished Russian hopes. Safonov had enough to keep the guy after Hojbjerg’s great pass, which left him completely at the mercy of the red lead.
And then came the blunder of the day, of the week, of the month, of the year. A back pass as the defense tried to get the ball played converted by unforced error in the assist gave Poulsen 2-0 off a sold goal. Zobnin will not forget his mistake as long as he lives.
By then the party was already in Denmark. A very challenging penalty served Dzyuba to make it 2-1, but the duel was Danish. The goals of Christensen and Maehle sentenced in the middle of the shipwreck and Russian. For the moment, the great Russia will no longer walk through old Europe. He didn’t deserve it.
