Rory McIlroy: “Green diaries make everyone lazier”

A few hours before the start of the US Open at Torrey Pines, Rory McIlroy returned to a subject that has fueled debates in recent years in the world of golf: green diaries. Already questioned in 2019 because it encroached on playing time, the USGA had decided to introduce new rules by reducing the amount of information in the notebooks. This week, it is a new milestone that has been crossed because according to Golfweek, the office of the PGA Tour players’ committee has decided and the green books should completely disappear next season.

Rory McIlroy, Chairman of the Players Advisory Council, took a stand and for him green books are not necessary: “It’s not really a benefit, it’s just taking away a skill that takes time and practice to master. I think the greenbook is a real skill that some people master better than others, and taking it out negates the advantage people have. Honestly, I think it makes everyone lazy. For example in Augusta, there aren’t any, and you see a lot of players taking their time around the greens, hitting so many more putts. It’s because they have to. “

Winner of the US Open in 2011, Rory McIlroy has known the circuit for a while now and thinks above all about the good health of his sport: “Usually what we talk about in our meetings is confidential, but what I can say is that I use a green book and would like to get rid of it. We’re all in the same boat. Most of the players on the tour will use it if we are entitled to it but we have to look further and think about what is good for the game. I would like them to be banned and not to be used again. “
