Romain Grosjean tries to extinguish himself a starting fire in the front of his car

Engaged on the urban route of Detroit, the eighth round of the IndyCar championship, the former Formula 1 driver had to retire at the end of the race.

A little over six months after his appalling accident in Sakhir, Romain Grosjean faced fire again this Sunday, during the second IndyCar race of the weekend in Detroit (Michigan). But unlike Bahrain, where the images of the explosion of the Franco-Swiss Haas had raised fears of the worst, the ex-Formula 1 driver had the leisure to extricate himself, unscathed, from his car. Faced with the start of fire in the front of his car, the Geneva resident rushed to the edge of the track to retrieve a fire extinguisher in order to extinguish himself the start of a fire, which started with the brake system, said his team. Dale Coyne Racing after the race.

The Firefighters of France invite him to become a volunteer firefighter

Forced to retire twelve laps from the finish, Grosjean was also quickly exfiltrated by rescuers, rushed in in a race then under the yellow flag. On the video, the driver seems to want to stay with his car before resigning himself to stepping aside under the pressure of the marshals, used to this kind of situation. “I take care of my cars,” Grosjean explained on Twitter. “Bad luck this weekend, excellent qualifying (he was fifth on the grid, editor’s note) but bad luck on the track… See you next time,” he continued on the same media, where he reacted with humor to the call of the Firefighters of France to become a volunteer firefighter: “We will welcome you there with pleasure … you definitely have all the skills that are going well in addition to being fire resistant!”

On the track side, it was the Mexican Pato O’Ward (SP McLaren) who became the first driver to record a second success this year, taking the lead in the championship at the same time for a small point ahead of the Catalan Alex Palou (Chip Ganassi). Eighth on the Detroit urban route, Simon Pagenaud (Penske) is fifth overall after his podium snatched in Indianapolis at the end of May. His compatriot Sébastien Bourdais (AJ Foyt) had to settle for 16th place in the race. Next meeting for the whole paddock in a week at Road America, Wisconsin.
