PARIS – Novak Djokovic left the pitch and went to the locker room to talk to himself a bit after losing the first two rounds of the men’s Roland Garros final on Sunday.

Part of him was worried that he was too physically weakened to overcome this delay against a younger opponent. The other part insisted he could.

Helped by inspired tennis in the last three sets, Djokovic offered his best to defeat Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-7 (6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to sign a second title at Roland Garros and a 19th career major title.

“There are always these two voices in my head. There is one that says it’s over. That voice was very strong after the second set, Djokovic said. I felt like it was time to give importance to the other voice and remove the first one. I told myself I could do it and encouraged myself. “

When the third set started, Djokovic was feeling and playing better and better.

“After that, there wasn’t much of a doubt,” he said.

Tournament favorite Djokovic took more than four hours to come from behind and defeat Tsitsipas on Parisian clay. The fifth seed was playing his first career Grand Slam final.

“Suddenly, I felt out of the game,” Tsitsipas analyzed. I felt that I had lost my game a bit. ”

The “Djoker” at the same time obtained a seventh title in his last 11 participations in a Grand Slam tournament. He also became the third tennis player in history to win two or more titles in each of the four major tournaments.

Tsitsipas won first after dodging a first set point in the tiebreaker, following a daring forehand winner. He also looked more dynamic than his 34-year-old opponent in the second set, who had just delivered a titanic duel in the semi-finals against Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

Djokovic did not lose his temper, however, and recovered in the third set. It culminated in the fourth game of the inning, when he converted his fifth break point of the game.

The Serbian wiped out a two-set deficit to eventually win five times in his prestigious career. He was participating in his 29th Grand Slam final.

During his run to the title, Djokovic inflicted just a third loss to Nadal in the Spaniard’s 108 games at the Roland Garros tournament.

Djokovic also defeated Nadal in the quarterfinals in 2015, before bowing out in the finals that year. The same result seemed about to happen against Tsitsipas.

“It was not easy for me,” said the Serb. Both physically and mentally. “

No space? No problem for Djoko!
