Knowing that at this time we would already have actions on the court, we will review a little about the history of one of the teams with the most laureates in basketball on the Pacific coast, Rayos de Hermosillo.

Basketball is back

After the disappearance of the Soles de Hermosillo, who played the Cibacopa from 2003 to 2005, even reaching a final that they lost to Obregón, in 2009 professional basketball returned to the capital of Sonora.

Since then and to date, Rayos became a team used to reaching the playoffs, always being competitive teams and well managed by coaches with experience in American basketball.

Similarly, it is one of the most renowned teams in professional basketball in this area, reaching the final six times and winning the title in three of them (2012, 2013 and 2019) and the runner-up in the rest (2011, 2016 and 2017).

With this, Rayos shares with Tijuana Zonkeys and the extinct Trigueros de Ciudad Obregón as the teams with the most championships within the Cibacopa, but they are the ones who have reached the final the most, since Trigueros did it five times and Tijuana three (perfect step). in finals).

Rayos, like other professional teams that have resided in Hermosillo for this sport, plays in the Arena Sonora (formerly the State Gymnasium), a place that has adapted over the years and is now recognized as one of the best in the country.

The Arena Sonora has hosted official and amateur tournaments, from school levels to National (Olympics).

Glory and uncertainty

Rayos de Hermosillo managed to break a five-year streak without being champion in 2019, including two lost finals in 2016 against Náuticos de Mazatlán and in 2017 against Halcones de Ciudad Obregón.

The team led by an already historic coach for the club, Dan Tacheny, won a new title and was shaping up to continue as a team that would seek a new two-time championship in 2020 now under the tutelage of Steven Walton (Tacheny’s assistant).

However, the 2020 season had to be abruptly canceled due to the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic, a campaign in which Hermosillo had played 4 games, all of them with triumph.

After that moment of glory, currently the fans are in the uncertainty of what will happen to their team and Cibacopa, since being a league that is lived with intensity between the months of March to July, the 2021 edition could not be held either for safety reasons. of everyone involved.
