“These are the necessary steps to ensure the success of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Koike told reporters after meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihidi Species.

Two parks and a university were selected for streaming the games. Koike announced that there will now be vaccination centers instead.

The Tokyo Olympics, which were postponed for a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, will run from July 23 to August 8. The Paralympic Games are scheduled for this summer from August 24 to September 5.

There are currently no indications that the games could be canceled at the last minute, but polls suggest that many Japanese would like to postpone the games.

In Japan, the campaign to vaccinate people against Covid-19 started slowly, and although it is now gaining momentum, just over 6% of the population have received both doses of Covid-19.

The organizers of the Japanese Olympic Games and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have reaffirmed their commitment to safe play for all participants and Japanese citizens, based on strong countermeasures against Covid-19.

The number of foreign participants in the Olympics has been reduced and athletes will be tested for Covid-19 every day, even for those who have been vaccinated.

The games will take place without foreign visitors and on Monday it will be announced how many local spectators will be given the opportunity to watch the Olympics in person.

On Thursday, the Japanese government confirmed the lifting of the state of emergency in Tokyo.
