Peruvian cycling returns to the Olympic Games after 29 years | News

The cyclist from Ayacucho Royner Navarro Calle was officially designated as the representative of Peruvian cycling in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and will compete on July 24 on the individual route over 255 kilometers. This was confirmed by the president of the Peruvian Cycling Federation (FPC), Gustavo Matus de la Parra.

The national pedal boat belongs to the Athlete Support Program (PAD) and the Vamos con Tokio Program of the Peruvian Institute of Sport (IPD), programs that provide financial subsidies to high-performance athletes classified for the Tokyo Games and those who are still fighting for a quota ..

So far, the Peruvian Olympic delegation is made up of 30 exponents, who agreed to the maximum appointment directly and on their own merits.

The present Team Peru is the most numerous of the 21st century, surpassing the 29 athletes who went to the Rio 2016 Games, highlighting that the classifications are individual and not in group sports.

On the other hand, Royner’s classification decision is based -explained the federation- on the continuous evaluations, analysis and controls carried out by the coach of the national team, Arlex Méndez Peñuel, Navarro was chosen.

Navarro had achieved the quota for the country in May 2019 when he finished fourth in the Pan American Road Championship held in Hidalgo (Mexico). However, the FPC had announced that, in case of winning the quota, it would be defined close to the Games and based on who had the best performance at that time. Among those evaluated was also Alain Quispe.

Royner Navarro allows cycling to return to the Olympics after 29 years. The last rider to participate was Anthony ‘Tony’ Ledgard, who competed in the track events (velodrome) in Barcelona 1992.

In the route, the last one had been Ramón ‘El Cóndor’ Zavaleta from Cusco in Los Angeles 1984.

There are still some qualifying chances in athletics and open water swimming.
