The semi-finals began Thursday at Roland Garros. The Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova was the first to earn her place by triumphing over Tamara Zidansek. Maria Sakkari and Barbora Krejcikova are expected on center court to take second place in the final.

The 12e Roland-Garros day is devoted Thursday, June 10 to the women’s semi-finals of the individual draw. None of the four semi-finalists of the 2021 edition, Maria Sakkari (18e World Cup), Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (32e), Barbora Krejcikova (33e) et Tamara Zidansek (85)e), had not reached this level in Grand Slam before today.

This is only the second time in the Open era, after the Australian Open in 1978, that the four semi-finalists in the women’s draw are all newcomers.

• Pavlyuchenkova dismisses Tamara Zidansek

Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova triumphed over Slovenian Tamara Zidansek in straight sets for a place in the Roland Garros final.

The two semi-finalists deliver a hooked first set. Zidansek breaks entry before confirming his serve with a shutout. Pavlyuchenkova does not panic and wins his faceoff, then cancels his opponent’s break. The Russian passes in front on the occasion of the fourth service of the Slovenian, but Zidansek neutralizes the advantage of his opponent to pick up at 5-5. The former snowboarder nevertheless cracks at the worst of times: by committing a double fault, she lets the set slip (7-5).

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova takes the first two games of the second round. If Zidansek takes her serve, the Russian does the same before winning her face-off. While the 32e world now seems untouchable at 4-1, she seems to be in pain and in need of a physiotherapist. She then tries to cut the match short but her opponent does not hear it that way. Zidansek inflicts a shutout on the Russian who tries to spare herself, cancels her break. On her serve, she has the opportunity to equalize. However, too imprecise, it lets the game slip away due to two unforced errors. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova serves for the set and wins her place in the final (6-3).

The Russian will face the winner of the upcoming match between Maria Sakkari and Barbora Krejcikova.
