Pablo Laso renews with Madrid until 2023

Pablo Laso has renewed his contract with Real Madrid for two more seasons, until 2023. Three days after the white team lost the final of the Endesa League against Barça at the Palau, Real Madrid announced on Friday the continuity of the coach Vitoriano until the end of the 2022-2023 campaign.

Laso has already completed ten seasons at Real Madrid, with which he has won 20 titles, including two Euroleague, five Leagues and six Cups, and has become the coach who has directed the most games in the history of the white club ( 774) and the one with the most victories (596). This season, the team reduced by injuries, the pandemic and the departure of Facundo Campazzo and Gaby Deck to the NBA, Real Madrid has closed it without any great title, since it only won the Spanish Super Cup, but the entity that President Florentino Pérez maintains his confidence in Laso, reinforced with a contract extension that was taken for granted since February.

Laso and Real Madrid reached an agreement to continue together for two more years, during the Copa del Rey dispute won by Barcelona at the WiZink Center. It is already the sixth renewal of the Basque coach as coach of Madrid, with whom he will be at least 12 seasons. Laso fulfilled his contract on June 30 and his continuity was practically closed before Real Madrid lost the final cup to the eternal rival. In the ACB League final recently resolved, the Merengue team was also surpassed by the culé, by two victories to zero, the first on the Madrid court and the second and final on Tuesday at the Blaugrana.

Two from Lolo Sainz

Laso is only two titles away from reaching Lolo Sainz, who spent 14 seasons on the white bench (between 1975 and 1989), and five from the legendary Pedro Ferrándiz, who won 27 trophies in 13 campaigns, spread between 1959 and 1975. With from Vitoria, Madrid have lifted ten more titles than in the 22 seasons prior to his arrival, when the basketball section had up to 17 different coaches.

Since his arrival on the Madrid bench in 2011, the team has won all possible titles, including the historic repóker in the 2014-2015 academic year. In 2015 and 2018 Laso was elected best coach of the Euroleague, and has also been appointed coach of the year by the AEEB on five occasions (2013, 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2021).
