One silver and three bronzes of Spanish Paralympic judo in the last qualifying tournament for Tokyo | Leader in Social Information

The tournament was held this weekend and the judo places in the Tokyo Paralympic Games will be officially assigned on June 28, according to the Spanish Paralympic Committee (CPE) reported on Monday.

Sergio Ibáñez (category under 66 kilos) obtained the best result of the Spanish delegation. After successfully passing the group stage, he won in the semifinals of Australian Wayne Phipps, but in the fight for gold he was defeated by Uzbek Uchkun Kuranbaev.

The brothers Daniel and Álvaro Gavilán (less than 60 and less than 73 kilos, respectively) achieved two bronze medals. Álvaro, who fought in the largest category, initially beat Brazilian Luan Pimentel, but was later cut off by Georgian Bachuki Shelia. In the play-off, he won the remaining three bouts against Mamatibraim Suranov (Kyrgyzstan), Bekzat Mukhanbetov (Kazakhstan) and Osvaldas Bareikis (Lithuania), to take third place.

His older brother, Daniel, started with triumphs over Canadian Justin Karn and Uruguayan Henry Borges, but in the semifinals, Georgian Zurab Zurabiani prevented him from entering the fight for gold. In the fight for third and fifth place, the Madrid native did manage to eliminate Brazilian Thiago Marques.

In the lighter men’s category, the Andalusian Borja Pahissa also participated, who missed the other bronze medal against Borges.

The only female representative in the Spanish team, the laureate Marta Arce, also brought a bronze from Great Britain in less than 63 kilos. The Valladolid, holder of three medals in Paralympic Games, added another podium to her record by defeating the Argentine Nadia Agostina Boggiano in the decisive fight.

With these results and in the absence of the official quota allocation, Sergio Ibáñez and Álvaro Gavilán are located within the ranking positions that give access to the Tokyo Paralympic Games, while Marta Arce remains right at the gates.
