NFL: six impact players still free

The NFL offseason is fast approaching, with the clubs in the midst of their respective minicamps, but a few big names still find themselves on the list of players without a contract for the next season. Some teams might be tempted to make a phone call to these athletes.

Todd Gurley, Ball carrier

The former Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons received interest from a few teams, including the Detroit Lions and the Baltimore Ravens, with whom he was able to speak without coming to an agreement. . The 26-year-old is far from who he was in 2017 and 2018, when he had respective seasons of 2,093 and 1,831 total yards, in addition to registering 40 majors, spread over those two years. . The biggest reason for Gurey’s decline – and possibly one of the biggest reasons he’s still without a contract – is his known arthritis problem in his left knee, which limits him tremendously.

Richard Sherman, Defensive Back

The last still active member of the former Seattle Seahakws ‘Legion of Boom’ has yet to find a taker. Sherman had one of his worst seasons in 2020, his third with the San Francisco 49ers, who only took part in five duels with a calf injury. During those five games, the 33-year-old allowed opposing receivers to catch 72.4% of passes to them when he needed to provide cover. On four occasions he was the player at fault when a receiver crossed the end zone.

Steven Nelson, Defensive Back

In his first season with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, following a four-season stint with the Kansas City Chiefs, Nelson established himself as one of the best in his position. That year, only 50% of the passes thrown to a receiver he was covering were caught by the offensive player and none of them resulted in an opponent’s touchdown. Nelson also intercepted a ball. The last season has been a little more difficult, as the now 28-year-old athlete was considered to be the opponent’s major player at fault.

Justin Houston, Quarterback Hunter

At 32, Houston will probably not reproduce his 2014 season, when he recorded 22 quarterback sacks, but that does not prevent him from rolling his bump. In each of the past four seasons, he has collected at least eight, in addition to recovering two dropped balls.

KJ Wright, Linebacker

Wright had a more than respectable season with the Seahawks in 2020, but the linebacker is still looking for a new team. The 32-year-old athlete at the start of the next season had two quarterback sacks, an interception, caused a fumble and recovered two dropped balls. Wright also made 86 tackles, 60 of which were solo.

Melvin Ingram, Quarterback Hunter

Ingram is another one of those aging defensive players still in the market. Unlike the others mentioned above, the 32-year-old has had his worst season of his career. This 2020 campaign ended prematurely, after seven games due to a knee injury. Still, the quarterback hunter was unable to secure a single sack for the first time in his career, having scored at least 10 twice in his career.

Honorable mentions: On the offensive side of the ball, several veteran wide receivers could still help a team, including Larry Fitzgerald, Golden Tate and Danny Amendola.
