Basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki returns to his heart club, the Dallas Mavericks, and will support the NBA franchise in an advisory capacity. The best player in the history of the Mavs should help with the search for a new general manager and a new head coach.

“Mark Cuban (club owner, ed.) Approached me about a role as an advisor, and of course I said yes. I’m happy to support my Mavs,” said Nowitzki.

“Want to contribute as much as possible”

On Wednesday, General Manager Donnie Nelson announced his departure from the Mavericks, and both sides separated amicably. Just one day later, the club also announced the separation from Nowitzki’s former master coach Rick Carlisle after 13 years.

“Donnie Nelson and Rick Carlisle were both mentors and have played a huge role in my career and the success of this franchise, I will miss them,” said Nowitzki. “It is now important for me to join Mark and contribute as much as possible as we move forward. “

Like Nowitzki, Donnie Nelson (58) joined the Mavericks in 1998, and in 2005 he inherited his father Don (81) as General Manager. Both had Nowitzki together with club owner Ross Perot jr. once visited in Würzburg to make the move to North America attractive to him. With success: Nowitzki stayed with the Mavs for 21 years and led them to their first and only championship in 2011.
