NBA MARKET – Chauncey Billups next coach of the Blazers

Current assistant to the Los Angeles Clippers Chauncey Billups is the likely choice to become the Portland Trail Blazers’ next head coach, according to John Hollinger of The Athletic.

The Trail Blazers have the longest open playoff qualifying streak in the NBA, but they split from Terry Stotts after the team was eliminated in the first round for the fourth time in the past five years.

Assistant to the Los Angeles Lakers Jason Kidd removed his name from their view on June 6, stating that the Trail Blazers “will have excellent candidates for their head coaching job, but I have decided not to be one of them.”

Whoever chooses general manager Neil Olshey, the new coach “comes with a clock ticking in the background” due to the uncertain situation regarding Damian Lillard, Hollinger notes, as league teams are considering potential interest in a trade this offseason.

Lillard recently gave his approval to Billups as a candidate. 44, Billups is in his first season as an assistant on Tyronn Lue’s staff at the Clippers after serving as a studio analyst for ESPN.
