MVP Race – The Final: The Evidence Aaron Rodgers

Thursday is MVP! At the heart of a duel that will have kept us in suspense throughout the season against Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers seems to have brought the final touch of a work which should in all likelihood bring him a third MVP title. Back on a season combined with almost perfect.

A start full of uncertainties

We are April 23, 2020, the night of the last draft. That day, the Packers created a surprise by selecting Jordan Love, quarterback, in the first round. An insult to an Aaron Rodgers true guide of the Packers for more than a decade? Many will take it like that. But not the main interested party who will hasten to respond on the ground. However, despite an already excellent start to the year (300 yards and 3 touchdowns on average per game over the first four weeks), Aaron Rodgers drains less interest from the media than Patrick Mahomes or Russell Wilson. The Chiefs quarterback, seen as the perfect player of the moment, trusts the best of each week by making the dream cast that surrounds him shine. At the same time, Russell Wilson, the hottest player at the start of the season, cuts everything in his path. The place to talk about Aaron Rodgers is therefore necessarily reduced, leaving him quietly to advance in a submarine. A weak media presence which will get even worse from the fifth week. Indeed, on the field of Tampa Bay, the veteran quarterback will literally sink weapons in hand in the middle of his soldiers, totally dominated by Buccaneers already developed. If therefore, questions about Rodgers rain, this match will ultimately only be a booster shot that will allow the leader of the Packers to make it his only misstep of the season. And symbol of this pivotal moment of the season that is this defeat against the Buccaneers, Aaron Rodgers who will throw two interceptions in this game will only throw three in the rest of the season.

So of course, it won’t be Green Bay’s only loss. And that against the Colts in overtime after having largely led in the score, even more than that against the Vikings will prove to be infuriating. But in both cases, they will not really be attributable to an Aaron Rodgers who has tried everything. But they will have at least had the merit of reminding everyone and first and foremost to his teammates, that he will not be able to do everything alone.

A historic season

It would be an understatement to say that Aaron Rodgers’ season has been successful. The quarterback was simply exceptional in every area of his game. Best assessment in the NFL (121.5), his score is even the second best assessment in history over a season. The leader ? Aaron Rodgers, during his MVP season in 2011. He even adds to that, a ratio of 48 touchdowns for 5 completely insane interceptions which will have allowed him to reign over this season. He achieves this with finally a single elite receiver, and without a top 5 tight end. So of course, his offensive line did a fantastic job and the ground game carried by an ultra-consistent Aaron Jones took a lot of work off him. But to achieve all this with a range of targets ultimately not provided enough reveals even more the exceptional level he has reached this season.

Another slightly anecdotal statistic but which also comes to underline the exceptional season of the quarterback, the Packers achieved less punt this year than Aaron Rodgers did not throw touchdowns. This speaks for itself.

Classification

In the absence of Patrick Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers was not the only player to capitalize on the situation. Behind him, Derrick Henry took the opportunity to show that he was not only the best running back in the league but also one of the best player in this league. Overkill, as usual to become the eighth player in history to spend 2000 yards on the ground in one season. So Mahomes, along with Josh Allen the other two players to have scored the MVP race this season secure third and fourth place. Once is not custom, a defender is his place in the top 5. But could it be otherwise for TJ Watt given the way he has carried all the defense of the Steelers this season?
