Modric, the masterpiece that qualifies Croatia

Victorious over Scotland (3-1), Croatia won its ticket to the knockout stages of Euro 2020. Thanks in particular to a jewel from Luka Modric.

It was a match to life, to death, between two teams for which the contract was simple. Victory or nothing, because a draw would have eliminated Croatia and Scotland jointly. We could expect a spectacular game, rich in goals, between two teams forced to win. And it is ultimately the Croats who won the bet (3-1).

The Scots, who found their home in Glasgow after bringing back a heroic draw from their trip to Wembley at neighboring England, gave everything in this meeting. They did not let go after the opener from Nikola Vlasic (1-0, 17th), Callum McGregor arriving to equalize with a nice shot from the entrance to the area (1-1, 42nd).

Croatia even takes second place

But the Croats, still vice-defending world champions, ended up making their experience and talent speak. Luka Modric does not miss it, and it is indeed the Ballon d’Or 2018 which unblocked the situation of an outdoor love of the right foot, halfway up, distilled from 20 meters (2-1, 62nd ).

Ivan Perisic, another part of the checkered selection, sheltered his team (3-1, 77th), and Croatia, long badly embarked on this Euro, well ensured its qualification for the knockout stages. To see Modric’s joy and relief at the final whistle, it’s anything but anecdotal. Better, thanks to the defeat of the Czech Republic in England, Croatia snatches second place in the group, and will face the second in group E, that of Sweden and Spain.
