While Fernando Tatis Jr. continues to make his eyes widen, Charlie Blackmon gave the Colorado Rockies an 8-7 win on Wednesday ahead of the San Diego Padres.

Tatis hit his 21st homer of the season in loss and he produced two runs. He is the only under-22 player since Jo DiMaggio in 1937 to record 21 homers, 44 runs scored and 11 doubles in a 49-game streak.

Tatis wasn’t the only Padres player to shine offensively in the game, as Trent Grisham produced three runs, including the tie-breaking 7-7 early in the ninth inning.

Blackmon had no intention of seeing the extra innings. He pushed Trevor Story to plate with a single to formalize the Rockies’ victory.

DeGrom injures himself while dominating

Jacob deGrom was taken out of the game with injury on a second straight start, this time after three perfect innings of work with shoulder pain, but the New York Mets relievers took over to complete a 6-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night.

After completing the third round, deGrom immediately walked through the tunnel leading to the locker room. Moments later, the Mets announced that the right-handed gunner had a problem with his shoulder.

“I felt good in the warm-up, I felt really good in the first and second and there in the third my shoulder was sore,” explained deGrom.

“It’s starting to be an old tune. I want to be on the pitch and compete. “

DeGrom appeared to wince in pain after a shot against Eric Sogard in the third inning. He made 51 throws, the last a 99 mph fastball to knock out pitcher Robert Stock on three catches.

It was his eighth of nine batters he faced.

DeGrom said initial testing eliminated any major issues. However, he was planning to take tests and exams on Thursday.

“After the first two throws, I was like ‘OK, maybe this will wear off’. And it continued with every throw during the round. And that’s when I was like ‘OK, maybe we should act smart,’ ”added deGrom, who admitted his frustration at having to leave games this way.

The Mets right-hander had time to reduce his earned-run average to 0.54. He’s the first pitcher since at least 1901 to register at least eight strikeouts over three perfect innings to start a game, according to STATS.

DeGrom also had a run with a single in the second inning. So far this season, he has produced six runs and conceded just four earned runs. His hit helped him raise his batting average to .423 in 2021.

On Friday against the Padres, deGrom conceded a hit and no runs in six innings before leaving the game with right flexor tendonitis.

The next day, he underwent a magnetic resonance imaging test which revealed no problems and resumed his usual routine between two departures. On Wednesday, he took his place on the mound after a normal four-day rest.

Sean Reid-Foley (2-0) replaced deGrom and earned the win after conceding a run in two innings. Anthony Rizzo put an end to hopes for a perfect or no runs or combined hit by hitting a home run after a fourth inning out.

Kevin Pillar broke the tie 0-0 with a double run for a point against Stock (0-1) in the second set. He added a long ball in the fifth.

Dominic Smith slammed a solo homerun after a third out and added an RBI on a ground ball immediately after a walk to Francisco Lindor with the pads all occupied.

The Cubs left two runners on the trails in the fourth inning, against Reid-Foley, and in the sixth against Aaron Loup.

They had two of their three hits of the game in the ninth inning, including a two-run Rafael Ortega homerun against Drew Smith.

Edwin Diaz was rushed to the mound and struck out alternate hitter Willson Contreras on a ball in center field for his 14th save of the season.

Recalled from the Cubs’ school in Iowa at the pre-game AAA level, Stock allowed five runs, four hits and six walks in his first Major League start. He had three strikeouts.

D-Backs equal sad record

The Arizona Diamondbcks tied a sad record for mediocrity by losing a 22nd straight road game to a 13-7 flag against the San Francisco Giants.

Buster Posey hit a three-run homerun in the first inning which lasted 43 minutes to contribute to the Diamondbacks’ 13th straight loss, which was a rare hit on June 1 against the Mets at home.

Giants pitcher Anthony DeSclafani got off to another great start, conceding just two runs on five hits and striking out five batters in five innings of work.

On Tuesday, the Diamondbacks collapsed as they led 7-0. The game ended then 9-8 for the Giants. Arizona will be able to “beat” the sad mark of the New York Mets 1963 and the Philadelphia Athletics of 1943, starting Thursday when they play the last game of their series against the Giants in San Francisco.
