Italy is that country that cheers on its rising stars of sport, but then hinders their career. “Now I’m going home and I have to study for my high school diploma, which is like challenging Djokovic” declared Lorenzo Musetti immediately after the elimination in the round of 16 of Roland Garros against the Serbian legend. Here, as soon as he returned to Tuscany, Lorenzo discovered that he had to give up tournaments in preparation for Wimbledon (to be held from June 28 to July 11). The reason? The external commissioner of the exam communicated his unavailability for the days agreed by the boy’s entourage and the Cecina school to carry out the tests.linguistic high school exam. Musetti’s coach, Simone Tartarini, obviously vented, accusing the school of “not helping the sport”. But Musetti (to whom Djokovic himself offered a “lift” to Wimbledon with his own private plane) is not the only sportsman forced to put his career in the background to continue his studies.

A very similar situation was experienced by the Serie A footballer Giulio Maggiore. The La Spezia midfielder (33 appearances and three goals this year in Serie A) in 2017 had to renounce participation in the Under 20 World Cup with the national team (where Italy closed in third place), precisely in order to achieve maturity. Fortunately, there is also talk of played tennis. Yesterday, in the first quarter-final of the day of Roland Garros (this edition went to press with the match between our Matteo Berrettini and Novak Djokovic still in progress), Rafa Nadal defeated Diego Schwartzman in four sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0) at the end of a hard-fought (with the exception of the fourth set) and spectacular match, as often happens between the Spaniard and the Argentine (especially on clay). And if Schwartzman returns home with the elimination, he can still be satisfied with having removed a set from Nadal, who had not lost a run at Roland Garros since the 2019 final against Dominic Thiem (in which he won 6-3, 5-7 , 6-1, 6-1). The Majorcan therefore confirms himself as the great favorite of the tournament, thanks to the thirteen successes already obtained at the French Open. The other semifinal (both are scheduled for tomorrow) will be between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev, both looking for their first career final in Paris. Today, however, space for the women’s semifinals: not before 3 pm Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova faces Tamara Zidansek, immediately after Barbora Krejcikova challenges Maria Sakkari. All live on Eurosport (visible on Sky and Dazn).
