Pilsen footballer David Limberský ended his professional career at the age of 37. An experienced defender, former club captain and national team member played 544 matches in the Victoria jersey and helped to win five championship titles. He informed about his decision on the club website.

“I needed to organize my thoughts with distance and in peace. I had a lot of time to think on vacation and I decided to end my professional career. The body just said enough,” said Limberský.

In addition to success in the league, the Pilsen offspring with the team won a cup and two super cups. He scored 25 goals and hit three times in the basic group of the Champions League. He played 40 matches for the national team and was at the European Championships 2012 and 2016.

However, he also did not avoid controversy on the field and in his personal life. He received a fine from the disciplinary commission for vulgar gestures towards fans or for a filmed penalty, in 2015 he crashed intoxicated and was not allowed to drive for a year. He lost the captain’s armband in Pilsen because of this and was fined heavily, but shortly after the incident he celebrated the goal scored by turning the imaginary steering wheel…

The head of the Pilsen club, Adolf Šádek, announced that his number 8 will be eliminated for next season and none of the players will dress him. He plans to work with Limbersky even after his active career.

“David and I sat quietly at the same table, where he announced my final decision. As I had announced and promised several times in the past, I offered David a continuation of our club, of which he is an integral part. However, we are not under any time pressure, his involvement so we will consider the operation of the club in peace, “said Šádek.

Limberský, who did not rule out possible starts in lower amateur competitions, confirmed that he would also welcome further cooperation with Pilsen.

“I’m not saying goodbye, I’ll be a Victorian my whole life, Viktorka is like a family to me. Of course it’s a little difficult to keep emotions now, but life goes on and maybe the fans will remember me as a football player only in good. And of course I believe that together we can still to prove great things and experience great football moments, “said Limberský, who has been working in Pilsen continuously since 2008 after a year ‘s engagement in Sparta.

Along with the team and fans, he is planning an official farewell match. “David Limberský is an icon of the club and we will want to prepare a dignified farewell for him accordingly. As soon as possible and the spectators can fill the stands of Doosan Arena, we will definitely organize this match in honor of David Limberský,” said Šádek and Limberský added: ” thank the fans right on the field, hopefully they will come to my last match. “
