Regensburg. The Guggenberg legionnaires have defended their top position in the 1st Bundesliga South. With two successes against Mainz Athletics, the Regensburg team improved their record to 21: 3 victories. This means that the Upper Palatinate will continue to be on par with the Heidenheim Heideköpf in front of the southern summit next weekend. Against the arch rivals from Rheinhessen, the team of coach Tomas Bison celebrated a clear 13: 3 success on Friday evening. On Saturday, Eric Harms didn’t decide the game until the last stroke and led his team to a 7-6 victory with a walk-off home run. The first meeting of the two eternal Bundesliga rivals was a clear matter. Mainz only recorded three hits against legionnaires starter Jan Tomek and then his fellow thrower Christian Pedrol. Two of them drove in the A’s in the fourth segment of the game, when they briefly took the lead with three runs. The Schwabelweiser had brought movement on the scoreboard for the first time in the third inning after a two-run single from Pascal Amon. Faced with the 2: 3 deficit in the meantime, the home side really turned it up in the second half of the game. In the fifth round, David Grimes equalized with his double, who brought team-mate Nino Sacasa over the home plate. Ex-professional Amon immediately led the bison troop back onto the winning road with a two-run home run.

Premature end to game one

As a result, the guests didn’t succeed much, while the Guggenberg legionaries continued to expand their lead. Jonathan Heimler crossed the starting base in the sixth section after a sacrificial ball from Sacasa. In the seventh inning, Eric Harms struck out for the first time this weekend and heralded the final spurt with his solo home run. Marcel Mariette after a goal from Paul Wittmann and catcher Heimler expanded the points cushion to 9: 3. The early end according to the ten-run rule was brought about by the Upper Palatinate with four more runs in the eighth round.

The second meeting on Saturday afternoon was much closer. Encouraged by the bankruptcy of the previous evening, the Mainz team started brilliantly with four runs in the first two innings against the Regensburg top starter Kaleb Bowman. In the second section, Pascal Amon awakened the home side’s offensive with his solo home run. Elias von Garßen and Elias Redle shortened to 3: 4 after a double from Alexander Schmidt. In the next round, Matt Vance equalized with another solo homerun. However, the Athletics did not give up and ended Bowman’s workday prematurely with their fifth point in the fifth period of the game. The otherwise strong US-American suffered seven goals combined with five runs during his appearance. On the plus side, there were ultimately five strikeouts versus one walk. Mitch Hillert took over the reins from his fellow thrower.

Jahn took the lead with a home run

Before the offensive game was quiet, Lukas Jahn countered the new Mainz lead with the next Regensburg home run. The long-time legionnaire brought two runs to the finish with his blow and the home side 6: 5 in front. It stayed at this score until the last round. Against the meanwhile substitute Pedrol, the Rheinhessen managed to equalize again. However, this did not last long. In the last chance to strike before extra time, Eric Harms knocked the ball out of the stadium for the legionnaires for the fourth time in this game. To the great cheer of the fans present in the Armin Wolf Arena, the native of Hamburg lapped the bases in peace and marked the 7: 6 victory point for the home side. It was the successful final act in a nerve-wracking prestige duel between the two Bundesliga veterans.
