Just lost in the endurance test: DFB women are defeated by France

Just lost in the endurance test
DFB women are subject to France

The German women’s soccer selection did well against France. However, they did not pass the toughest test – the decisive factor was a goalkeeping mistake.

A goalkeeper mistake brought the German women’s national team an avoidable defeat in the penultimate international match of the season. In the 1-0 (1-0) victory of the French team on Thursday in Strasbourg, Kenzi Dali (30) marked the goal of the evening with a long-range shot that surprised Merle Frohms, who was too far in front of her goal.

In front of around 3,000 spectators – 5,000 visitors were only allowed on Wednesday – the DFB-Elf dominated the game over long stretches of the first half. The hosts had the bigger chances and deservedly won. On Tuesday, the German team will play against Chile at the end of the season in Offenbach.

National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg was forced to make numerous changes due to an ever-growing list of prominent failures. Compared to the 3-1 win against Norway in April, only Lena Oberdorf, Jana Feldkamp and Svenja Huth were in the starting line-up. On the other hand, the national coach had to do without Lina Magull, Sara Doorsoun, Sara Däbritz, Marina Hegering and Melanie Leupolz for a short time due to injuries or illness, other players were not available from the start due to injuries.

Voss-Tecklenburg still wanted to see their young team’s actions. And that delivered. Only the DFB team played until the French were in charge. Led by Bayern players Sydney Lohmann and Linda Dallmann, the Germans played ball-safe from their own defense and ensured a clear overweight with a lot of speed. Only the creation of chances did not succeed because the decisive passes were played too imprecisely or technical errors prevented this.

A crack in the German game

The goal that fell practically out of nowhere caused a rift in the German game. The last quarter of an hour of the first half belonged to the hosts who, through Grace Geyoro, gave away the great chance to make it 2-0 after 37 minutes. Alone running towards Frohms, she failed because of the strongly reacting German goalkeeper, who ironed out her mistake from the goal.

Even after the change, the German team did not find their way back to the performance of the first half hour. The hosts developed some good chances after the DFB-Elf lost the ball, with Bayern attacker Viviane Asseyi (52nd) forgetting the best. Only then did the Germans get better after individual actions. A Dallmann opportunity (54th) was blocked at the last moment after a long solo by Clara Bühl. However, a regular build-up of the game did not materialize because the French defensive behavior improved and the hosts managed to interfere early on. This slowed the German team down.
