Budapest (dpa) – On the second day of the Judo World Championships in Budapest, the only German starter Sebastian Seidl clearly missed the final fights.

The 30-year-old Olympic candidate failed in Budapest after a first success in the weight class up to 66 kilograms in round two against the Italian European champion Manuel Lombardo. As at the beginning, the German Judo Association was again only at the start with one athlete, because no female athlete had been nominated for the competitions in the women’s weight class up to 52 kilograms.

The title fights in the Hungarian capital are considered a dress rehearsal for the German athletes a good six weeks before the start of the Olympic Games in Tokyo. The DJB therefore competes with numerous top judokas in Budapest, for whom points for the Olympic ranking are still at stake. Some still have to secure the Olympic ticket, others want to collect points for the seeding list for the competitions at the Games in Japan.
