Ion Izagirre, Spanish time trial champion

Ion Izagirre (Astana) has been proclaimed champion of Spain in the time trial. The Ormaiztegi rider set a time of 40:19 at the finish line, just one second less than David de la Cruz (UAE), second. Third was the young promise of Ineos Carlos Rodríguez at 47 seconds.

Izagirre has passed through the intermediate point of the test in second place, just under four seconds behind De la Cruz. In the second part of the fight against the clock he has shown good legs and has made good the predictions that placed him in the list of main favorites. Xabier Mikel Azparren (Euskadi Foundation) was tenth.

Honors within the reach of few

The youngest of the saga This is how he repeats the title in the test against the clock that he already led in the 2016 edition. He was also the smartest in the road test in 2014, when he played for the Movistar team.

He is the only cyclist from the orange factory who has won a stage in the big three. He managed to be the first in Falzes in the 16th stage of the Giro d’Italia at the end of the day’s break; raised his arms in the Tour de France by overtaking Nibali on a descent to frame Morzine’s way and completed the triplet in the 2020 Vuelta a España being the cleverest of the breakaway in the sixth stage and finishing off the great work done by his brother Gorka.

Add to the list of honors the Tour of Poland (2013), the Return of 2019 and a stage in the last edition ahead of Pello Bilbao in a disputed sprint.

The Ormaiztegi rider made his professional debut at Orbea in the 2009/2010 season and, subsequently, has played for the Euskaltel-Euskadi (2010-2013), Movistar (2014-2016), Bahrain Merida (2017-2018) and Astana (2019), his current outfit.

Enekoitz Azparren and Lourdes Oyarbide, third parties

Enekoitz Azparren (Laboral Kutxa) was third in the Sub 23 test, 15 seconds behind Igor Arrieta from Navarra, who covered the 24.6 kilometers in a time of 31:57.
