Indonesian badminton players depart for the Tokyo Olympics next month

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian badminton athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympics are scheduled to depart for Japan on July 8, 2021. Male doubles athlete Hendra Setiawan said the players are currently focusing on their training program.

“We plan to leave on July 8, so now we are concentrating on training,” said Hendra, who is paired with Mohammad Ahsan, in Jakarta on Thursday, June 10.

Hendra and Ahsan are second in the BWF world rankings in the men’s doubles category.

Hendra said that the athletes are not only preparing in terms of technique, but also to maintain their health, as the Olympics will take place amid the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

“There is no quarantine, the players will undergo a swab test, wait for the results for about a day and then practice at Kumamoto,” he said. The badminton training facility for Olympic athletes is located in Kumamoto Prefecture.

The Tokyo Olympics will be held from July 23 to August 8. Badminton matches will be held at Mushashino Forest Sports Plaza in Tokyo from July 24 to August 2. Eleven Indonesian badminton players will compete in five numbers.
