“I took some time for myself and my leg”

María Araújo, in Fontajau.
MARC MARTÍ

The renewal of María Araújo with theSpar Girona it took longer than expected to become official, but because there was another issue that occupied him. This was none other than his recovery, after being seriously injured during a training session last March. All his plans were twisted. In the playoffs, Eurobasket, Olimpic games… It was hard to assimilate. “From the first moment the club told me not to worry about the renewal of next season. I could count on continuing and being calm to focus on my knee. Everything has been facilitated “, explains the Galician pivot wing. The agreement for one more year and another optional course was practically closed in the first match that was held in Fontajau (Uni-Tenerife) once the worst prognosis of the injury has been confirmed: “We had already talked about it before. It took a few months until it was confirmed, but because it was a time to think only of me and my leg. I didn’t need to be bothered anymore and on both sides the idea was clear. He remembers the injury as if it were yesterday. “He was defending Elonu and in a normal movement I noticed how the knee went back and forth. I was on the ground for a long time because of the pain and when I got up I noticed the crek. Many of the team heard it too. I had a lot of moments in my head that I wanted to face like the play-offs, the Games, Eurobasket … I don’t know what hurt me the most, whether the injury or losing all that. Considering how competitive I am, it made me even angrier, ”he confesses.

Almost three months later, Araújo says he feels “better.” “At first it’s always hard. Especially the first month, which was physically terrible. Mentally also because life changes you radically and the plans you had escape. I am taking on this change little by little and now the rehabilitation is going well. I’m in perfect shape and my knee reacts well, although there are exercises that hurt and cost because the whole muscle has to be re-formed, ”he says. In principle, the calculations predict that it will play again at the end of 2021. The Galician, however, prefers not to set a date because this would be an “added pressure that takes its toll”. For the time being, he is still doing rehabilitation in Girona under the watchful eye of the club and later will march to its house, a Vigo, to continue recovery. He has spent the last two weeks doing morning and afternoon intensive care at the clinic Egarsat of Barcelona, where he has worked with antigravity machines to walk without his weight.

Who will be able to enjoy all the competitions is Laia Palau, who at 41 will play a fourth season with Uni. Araújo is delighted to be able to continue sharing a dressing room with the Barcelona base. “He’s always up to par, if he makes that decision it’s because he feels like it. Retiring in such an atypical year is not the best brooch. He wants to enjoy a good year in Fontajau with the fans “, he points out. Araújo also wants to step on Fontajau again with the main goal of “recovering”.
