How does baseball work ?: In Germany rather unnoticed, the Bundesliga is played here

Though the backlash sport is very popular in the United States, baseball is still a niche here in Germany. If a team in the top German division is fighting for points in the immediate vicinity, attention should be increased again here in the region.

To make baseball more interesting and easier, WOCHENBLATT gives an insight into the basic rules and the course of a game. Because what most people may not even have on the slip: A classic element from physical education in school is a simplified form of the baseball game. In baseball, two teams, consisting of nine players, compete against each other, one in attack and one in defense. The playing field consists of the “infield” and the “outfield”. In the “Infield” are the three “Bases”, the “Homeplate” and the “Mound”. On the “mound” is the “pitcher”, i.e. the thrower of the defending team. He throws the ball to the “homeplate” on which the “batter”, ie the bat of the attacking team, is located. His goal is to hit the ball as far into the “outfield” as possible in order to spin a lap around the three bases after his hit, called “run” in baseball jargon. If he has managed that and has reached the “home plate” again, his team receives a point. The defending team tries to prevent that. It achieves this by pushing the attacking player out, called “out” in technical terms. There are three types of “outs” that can end a player’s attack. The “flyout”, in which the struck ball is caught directly from the air, the “groundout”, when the ball reaches the “base” in front of the attacker and the attacker is thrown here. Also the “strikeout”. This is the case if the “batter” cannot utilize three throws of the “pitcher” and has to let them through in a defined space.

A game consists of nine so-called “innings”, in which each team is once in attack and in defense. If both teams have earned the same number of “runs” after the game, “extra innings” will be played until a winner has been determined.
The sport is particularly widespread in the United States, Latin America and Asia. The American “Major League Baseball” (MLB), as the league with the highest turnover, is the flagship of the baseball sport.
